This is a city that rarely makes those ‘Top 10 Must Visit Places’ lists but we decided to give this underrated destination a chance and we were shocked.

Join us as we explore Killerton House and its beautiful grounds, stepping in to a bygone era from Exeter’s past before we head in to the city centre where we are greeted by free museums and a city full of medieval history hidden among the modern buildings.

We visit the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and find a quirky little cafe for lunch before discovering the Medieval Exe Bridge, Stepcote Hill, Exeter Cathedral and the narrowest street in the world (apparently)!

Out of all of Britain’s cities we have visited so far, this one may have surprised us the most!

The City Of Exe - Exeter (1935)

The Rat With A Hat April 13, 2014 1:45 pm

Step inside the haunted heart of Exeter...

In this atmospheric walk through Rougemont Castle, we uncover its chilling legacy — from its Norman foundations in 1068 to the last witch trials in England. Learn the tragic fate of the Bideford Witches, how King James I’s obsession with the occult shaped national panic, and why this castle still carries an air of unease centuries later.

I brought my K2 meter and ran a Spirit Talker session on the castle grounds....The spirits might not be just stories....

Join me for a haunted walk through shadowy gardens, past ancient stone walls, and into the echoes of trials, executions, and things that still whisper in the silence.

Witch Trials & Ghosts Tales | Walking Through the Haunted History of Exeter Castle

The Rat With A Hat June 3, 2025 7:00 pm

Exeter is the gateway city to southwest England and is the historic capital of the county of Devon. Home to over two millennia worth of history, today you can explore Roman ruins, Norman fortifications, and medieval churches. Despite being home to around 130,000 residents, the city is pretty small and compact, meaning you can easily explore Exeter over the course of a weekend.

Exeter also has great train links to the nearby green rolling hills that Devon is so famous for, as well as to the sea thanks to its position on the River Exe. In this travel guide we're going to take you to some of Exeter's top attractions, and even show you some hidden gems. We'll then venture to Devon's oldest brewery pub (on a request stop train line) before heading to see some rare birds in the estuary town of Topsham.

    Exeter, Devon, In The Eighties.

The Rat With A Hat October 9, 2019 2:23 am

Exeter is a city of great beauty and a place very close to my heart. These are a few still images sourced from the public domain and edited together to make this montage. The damage to the Odeon Cinema by a wartime bomb can still be seen today if you look at the chunks missing from the steps and entrance way. It must be said the City Council are systematicaly finishing the work of the Luftwaffe, and so many of these old buildings have been demolished in my lifetime. The ornate Street lamps that can be seen in many of these images still exist in the Councils yard on Marsh Barton. .

    THE LOST CITY OF EXETER

The Rat With A Hat October 23, 2017 10:07 pm

In this episode Dr Sam Willis explores the Exeter Ship Canal which, with the exception of the Roman 'Fossdyke' is the oldest manmade waterway in Britain. Canal building is usually associated with the canal mania which gripped Britain between 1790 and the 1820s as the early years of the industrial revolution both posed problems and created solutions for those wishing to travel and transport goods across Britain. But the Exeter ship canal is 230 years OLDER than that. It was built in various stages but the first section was built in 1563 - in the Tudor period when Elizabeth I was queen. Sam meets Todd Gray a historian of Devon to find out more. The episode was filmed with incredible new done footage that shows the navigation from the city centre to the heart of the Exe estuary as never before.

The Oldest Canal in Britain? The Exeter Ship Canal

James Cotter's History of Exeter is a historical documentary presented by James Cotter. These mini historical documentaries will be about key and fascinating events in Exeter's wide-ranging and varied past.

The Fight For The Throne - James examines the role of Exeter and most importantly Danes Castle in a period of British history not as infamous as the periods that pasted before and after it but still as important in establishing Exeter as a key player in some of the most decisive events in British history including The Roman Invasion, The English Civil War and The Industrial Revolution. In the first episode of the series James looks at a period of history know as The Anarchy or The Nineteen-Year Winter where civil unrest swept across the country and The Norman King Stephen fought for his crown under a barge of chaos and rebellion from The Empress Matilda resulting in Exeters historic Rougemount Castle being sieged by the King himself in 1136.

We took a day trip to Exeter a great place to visit in the UK. With so much history, from its stunning Cathedral to it's beautiful Tudor buildings. Exeter has so much to offer for everyone and so much to see.
We spent the day walking around the historic sights and walked down the quirkiest, smallest, street in England. We enjoyed the sunshine at Exeter quay side and even saw a house that moved !!!. We were humbled by the well preserved St Catherines Almhouses the badly bombed church from world war two.
Exeter even has a dark history involving witches and was the last place in the UK that women were accused and executed for witch craft.
We can recommend visiting Exeter enough, there is so much more to Exeter than the university.

Teign Estuary Cam @ Teignmouth - Railcam UK

    Seaton Tramway web pages: https://www.tram.co.uk/
Timetable available at https://www.tram.co.uk/timetables

Seaton Tramway is a 2 ft 9 in (838 mm) narrow gauge electric tramway. The 3-mile (4.8 km) route runs through East Devon’s Axe Valley, between the coastal resort of Seaton, the village of Colyford, and the ancient town of Colyton.

It operates over part of the former Seaton Branch Line, which closed in March 1966. The tramway was established in 1970 by Claude Lane, founder of Modern Electric Tramways Ltd, which had previously operated in Eastbourne between 1954 and 1969.

Fourteen tramcars are part of the visitor attraction, which sees about 90,000 visitors per year. All of the tramcars are based on classic British designs, and vary in size between half-scale (1:2) and two thirds-scale (2:3). Most were built from scratch by Claude Lane and/or his successor Allan Gardner, but three were rebuilt from full-size cars which originally ran in London, Bournemouth and Exeter.

This camera is situated at Colyford Station looking south.

This morning in Dawlish, we had some pretty rough seas. I followed a few trains along the sea wall with the drone and then got my other camera out to capture the force of mother nature. Our new sea wall is doing a great job of sending the waves back out.

Richard Vobes goes off briefly to explore the wonderful sites and history of Exeter, in Devon - the old bridge, the quay and the old town. Of course, there are plenty more things to see and learn about. The video was a one man and a camera piece of test footage. I know I didn't do it justice and one day it would be great to return as my TV persona, The Bald Explorer, and do it properly. (I also have to confess, I shot this after an eye operation - and I was on steroids at the time. I subsequently lost my eye all together.)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the simple look at a delightful city.
