YouTube Video UExOZUpheWxuaDI2TTdVNkx5cFBaSmVSd0hBeUZuQ3hqNy41MzJCQjBCNDIyRkJDN0VD 👋🏼 Welcome to Exeter in Devon, one of Britain’s forgotten cities and best kept secrets.

This is a city that rarely makes those ‘Top 10 Must Visit Places’ lists but we decided to give this underrated destination a chance and we were shocked.

Join us as we explore Killerton House and its beautiful grounds, stepping in to a bygone era from Exeter’s past before we head in to the city centre where we are greeted by free museums and a city full of medieval history hidden among the modern buildings.

We visit the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and find a quirky little cafe for lunch before discovering the Medieval Exe Bridge, Stepcote Hill, Exeter Cathedral and the narrowest street in the world (apparently)!

Out of all of Britain’s cities we have visited so far, this one may have surprised us the most!

The City Of Exe - Exeter (1935)

The Rat With A Hat

Step inside the haunted heart of Exeter...

In this atmospheric walk through Rougemont Castle, we uncover its chilling legacy — from its Norman foundations in 1068 to the last witch trials in England. Learn the tragic fate of the Bideford Witches, how King James I’s obsession with the occult shaped national panic, and why this castle still carries an air of unease centuries later.

I brought my K2 meter and ran a Spirit Talker session on the castle grounds....The spirits might not be just stories....

Join me for a haunted walk through shadowy gardens, past ancient stone walls, and into the echoes of trials, executions, and things that still whisper in the silence.

Witch Trials & Ghosts Tales | Walking Through the Haunted History of Exeter Castle

The Rat With A Hat

Exeter is the gateway city to southwest England and is the historic capital of the county of Devon. Home to over two millennia worth of history, today you can explore Roman ruins, Norman fortifications, and medieval churches. Despite being home to around 130,000 residents, the city is pretty small and compact, meaning you can easily explore Exeter over the course of a weekend.

Exeter also has great train links to the nearby green rolling hills that Devon is so famous for, as well as to the sea thanks to its position on the River Exe. In this travel guide we're going to take you to some of Exeter's top attractions, and even show you some hidden gems. We'll then venture to Devon's oldest brewery pub (on a request stop train line) before heading to see some rare birds in the estuary town of Topsham.

Exeter, Devon, In The Eighties.

The Rat With A Hat

Exeter is a city of great beauty and a place very close to my heart. These are a few still images sourced from the public domain and edited together to make this montage. The damage to the Odeon Cinema by a wartime bomb can still be seen today if you look at the chunks missing from the steps and entrance way. It must be said the City Council are systematicaly finishing the work of the Luftwaffe, and so many of these old buildings have been demolished in my lifetime. The ornate Street lamps that can be seen in many of these images still exist in the Councils yard on Marsh Barton. . 8:12

THE LOST CITY OF EXETER

The Rat With A Hat

In this episode Dr Sam Willis explores the Exeter Ship Canal which, with the exception of the Roman 'Fossdyke' is the oldest manmade waterway in Britain. Canal building is usually associated with the canal mania which gripped Britain between 1790 and the 1820s as the early years of the industrial revolution both posed problems and created solutions for those wishing to travel and transport goods across Britain. But the Exeter ship canal is 230 years OLDER than that. It was built in various stages but the first section was built in 1563 - in the Tudor period when Elizabeth I was queen. Sam meets Todd Gray a historian of Devon to find out more. The episode was filmed with incredible new done footage that shows the navigation from the city centre to the heart of the Exe estuary as never before. 15:29
