A stretch of a motorway is to be closed as work to a new bridge nears completion.
The M4 will be closed in both directions overnight between junction 18 (Bath) and junction 19 (M32) from Monday 5 January to Saturday 10 January.
The closure, which will be in place from 20:00 GMT to 06:00 GMT, will allow work to the sides of the A432 Badminton Road Bridge, which crosses the motorway, and the removal of concrete casings.
Sean Walsh, Route Manager for National Highways, thanked local residents and drivers “for their continued patience”.
“In the new year, we’ll be working more on the sides of the bridge and eventually reconnecting it to the existing A432, which is a huge milestone for the project,” he added.
Diversions will be in place throughout the closure, with motorists travelling westbound told to travel via:
- From M4 Junction 18, exit the motorway roundabout to the A46 heading towards Bath.
- At the A46/A420 junction just past Pennsylvania take the A420 towards Warmley.
- At the A420/A4174 junction in Warmley, then take the A4174 towards the M32.
- Join the M32 at junction 1 and head to the M4 junction 19.
- Follow directions above in reverse for exiting at M4 junction 19.
Those travelling eastbound towards Chippenham and Swindon should travel the diversion in reverse.
The bridge, which was demolished in March after engineers discovered cracks in its structure, is expected to reopen in spring 2026.
