United States forces in the Caribbean Sea have seized another sanctioned oil tanker that the Trump administration says is linked to Venezuela, as part of broader US efforts to exert control over the South American country’s oil sector.
It is the sixth tanker seized, coming as Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado prepares to meet President Donald Trump.
The US says it is targeting what it describes as Venezuela’s “shadow fleet” — ships that use deceptive practices to conceal their role in transporting sanctioned oil.
The Trump administration has been seeking to curb Venezuela’s oil exports while working with the interim government to regain control over oil sales.
