Torquay’s recent woes were epitomised by the manner of Worthing’s first-half opener – goalkeeper James Hamon mistakenly played a short goal kick straight to home striker Brad Dolaghan who gratefully put his side into a 32nd-minute lead.
Coleman De-Graft doubled the tally 12 minutes after the break before Remeiro Moulton made sure of all three points when he made it 3-0 with 10 minutes left.
Matt Worthington fired in a long-range consolation goal for the visitors five minutes later as the Gulls lost for the third time in four matches.
Torquay’s cause was not helped by injuries – centre-back Sam Dreyer had to go off with an ankle injury shortly after the second half began while Louis Dennis and Sonny-Blu Lo Everton suffered gashes to their calf and ankle respectively.
“First half I thought we gave a really good account of ourselves, you can see we’re threadbare in the squad and you can see injuries coming off as well,” added Wotton.
“So we’re putting players in positions they’re not used to playing, we never stopped, we never stopped trying.
“I thought we started the game so courageously and so front-footed and we should score.
“I’m not going to hang anyone out to dry, but it’s a criminal mistake for the first goal and I’m convinced if we’re 0-0 at half time we go on and win the game.
“Second half they had two or three chances and scored two goals, we’ve had multiple corners and we kept going – the boys endeavour was was there for all to see.”
