Exeter is the gateway city to southwest England and is the historic capital of the county of Devon. Home to over two millennia worth of history, today you can explore Roman ruins, Norman fortifications, and medieval churches. Despite being home to around 130,000 residents, the city is pretty small and compact, meaning you can easily explore Exeter over the course of a weekend.
Exeter also has great train links to the nearby green rolling hills that Devon is so famous for, as well as to the sea thanks to its position on the River Exe. In this travel guide we’re going to take you to some of Exeter’s top attractions, and even show you some hidden gems. We’ll then venture to Devon’s oldest brewery pub (on a request stop train line) before heading to see some rare birds in the estuary town of Topsham.
