Just how high is the new sea wall at Dawlish going to be, in real terms. On Saturday last, a group from the Dawlish Town Council and supporters met on the sea wall. An ingenious graphic display was shown to all those who attended and local resident and holiday makers enjoying an afternoon promenade.

It is amazing to see just how high the planned wall is going to be and how much the view will be affected to all. Especially the children, infirm and disabled. Access to those in wheelchairs and children in prams will effectively be destroyed. Dawlish Tourism depends heavily on the proximity of the beach and railway. This wall will effectively destroy the reason to come to Dawlish.

New Sea Wall Works

👷‍♂️🏗️Since work restarted at Dawlish on 9 September, we've been busy excavating the toe of the sea wall in sections, creating temporary bays within which concrete can be poured to create foundations for the new sea wall. Today I've been Speaking to Richard from Network Rail who is going to talk us through the proposed new stretch of railway between Parson's Tunnel and Teignmouth.

The consultation will last for six weeks from 20 January to 1 March and Network Rail will again be conducting consultation events in Dawlish, Teignmouth, Holcombe, Newton Abbot, Torquay and Exeter.

Network Rail is inviting communities to share with them their views on further developed proposals to protect the vital rail line between Teignmouth and Holcombe.

The stretch of railway between Parsons Tunnel, near Holcombe, and Teignmouth is at potential risk from rising sea levels and landslips from steep, unstable cliffs. This risk was highlighted when the cliff failed in 2014, severing 50 Devon and Cornwall towns, cities and communities from the rest of the UK rail network for six weeks.

The consultation will last for six weeks from 20 January to 1 March and Network Rail will again be conducting consultation events in Dawlish, Teignmouth, Holcombe, Newton Abbot, Torquay and Exeter.

A free shuttle service will be offered to residents for the consultation sessions in Teignmouth. The events, being held at the golf course because of a lack of availability of venues in the town, will have a service running regularly between the railway station and the events at the golf course.

All other venues for the consultation are either central to the towns or villages they are being hosted in or easily accessible by public transport.

The latest refined set of proposals will explain revised design, environmental research and construction and will be illustrated by a 10-metre long scale model of the site.

Mike Gallop, route director for Network Rail, said: “We are grateful to everyone that took the time to provide their views in our first round of consultation, and I would encourage anyone who has an opinion on our proposals to provide us with feedback as these may lead to further refinements before we apply for consent to undertake the work.

“During the first phase of public consultation we were able to meet many hundreds of local residents to get their thoughts on our plans to enhance the resilience of this nationally important stretch of railway line that connects the South West to the rest of the country. I’m certain that this second round will be equally as beneficial, and I look forward to hearing the feedback on our revised plans.”

In this video we have the Dawlish Sea Wall Upgrade by Network Rail. Now the foundations are in place, they are removing the top surface and filling the main wall with fast set concrete.

You can see the steps have already been filled in just where they are working.

They are running approximately 6 weeks behind schedule.

Dawlish Sea Wall Upgrade by Network Rail is about half way through for Kings Walk in Dawlish. After months of foundation works and strengthening of the inner wall we are starting to see progress on the sea side of the wall now.

In total, over 100 panels will be installed at Dawlish over the coming weeks and residents, visitors and rail passengers can now start to see how the structure will look.

Once this phase of construction has been completed, Network Rail’s focus will turn to creating the wider, safer promenade which retains the views of the coast – a feature that the area is famous for.

Once the work to install and back-fill the panels is complete, track drainage will be put in, before construction staff then turn their focus to the promenade, where lighting, seating and surfacing work will be carried out.

Work is scheduled to be completed before the peak summer season.
