Greater Manchester Punk Vol 3 – Proud To Deviate 1977/81 – Album Review

Proud to Deviate is a limited release on puke green vinyl, by Manchester record store Vinyl Revival. It’s packed full of gems from the 1977-1981 period, including Emergency, recorded at the legendary TJM rehearsal studio (home of Joy Division, Buzzcocks and many others), Pure Product, whose Rejection came out on Streets Ahead records (home to Fast Cars) and The Teardrops, (featuring then The Fall’s Karl Burns) – who can forget Blueser Blue and You Leave Me No Choice!). Others include Local Heroes, Chaos, The Things, Mellotron, and two tracks, never released on vinyl by The Cliches (Mark Burgess pre-Chameleons) and one of the UK’s rarest punk singles by Rochdale band The Singles, which has sold for £2800 and was recorded at the now legendary Cargo Studio with only 100 being pressed!

Volume 1 was compilation of the week on Lauren Lavern’s BBC6 morning show.

This is a cracking release, highlighting some real Manchester rarities. It really is like lifting the lid and peering in on the city’s DIY culture of the late ’70’s, and with 2026 being the 50th anniversary of punk this compilation is the ideal addition to any punk collection!

A Plea From Louder Than War

Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.

To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
