Lemonsuckr, Theatre and My First Time appeared together at The Lexington in London as part of an evening showcasing new and exciting up and coming bands that are expected to shape the year ahead.

We’re attending the final night of The Line of Best Fit series of gigs titled Five Day Forecast at the (200 Capacity) Lexington. There’s been an impressive list of new bands to witness over the week, and history has taught us that a lot of the bands performing at this annual event will no doubt be seen once or twice again during the year at other locations around the UK.

Tonight’s headliners, My First Time, have already been seen a few times over the past few months, and we know we’ll not be disappointed. In between this Bristol band and the band we’re desperate to see again (Brighton-based Lemonsuckr) are Theatre from Limerick in Ireland, whose shimmering shoegaze is a nice bit of a refreshing diversion from the activities experienced just as we’d arrived.

Theatre boasts one of the most powerful voices we’ve witnessed from bands of this genre, and My First Time boast a collection of songs that one imagines may have been guaranteed floor fillers in student bars during the Brit pop years in the 1990’s (when it could be argued may have been before most of the people on stage this evening were even born). The headliners provide the subtle sarcasm, some clever lyrics and the ability to get crowds (crouching down and) jumping around throughout their fabulous selection of songs they serve up.

It’s an early start, and Lemonsuckr arrive on time as advertised. The singer is standing in the crowd early on with a cowbell, whilst enthusiastic punters are already dancing around him. It’s clear that we’re not the only ones here who have previously been knocked out by this bands live performance. They’re pretty much as close to being a ten out of ten band you can get for at least one of us. It took about three minutes to come to this conclusion when we recently found ourselves glancing down at our clean shoes, already imagining them being covered with mud at one of the summer festivals (and moaning that this would be better at nighttime than four o’clock in the afternoon).

Lemonsuckr: The Lexington, London – Live ReviewIt’s not even 8pm, and we’re in the same room as this Brighton quintet again as they fire through the best half an hour one of us has heard since that last half an hour watching the same band a couple of months ago. Their inclusion at the festivals we love to attend will come, probably this summer during the daylight hours and then give or take a year or so, they’ll rip into huge crowds well after our usual bedtime. We’ve seen it before; Deadletter, Idles, Fat Dog, Big Special, Murder Capital, Franz Ferdinand, Sports Team …..Lemonsuckr sit comfortably alongside these bands already. We know little about them at the moment except that they claim to have locked themselves inside a shipping container down on the south coast in order to write these tunes we’re hearing, the tunes we have already have available at the click of a button that are all huge euphoric bangers that it’s expected a lot of people will soon find themselves dancing along to.

Lemonsuckr: The Lexington, London – Live ReviewOnce these tunes we hear tonight really take off, we can be forgiven for thinking there’s a bank of keyboards at the back providing all the squeaking, buzzing and bleeping. Maybe there is, but on closer inspection, it seems as if it’s the guitars that are making all the right noises to cause those here to be waving their arms around in front of these boys. Five boisterous individuals in shirts and ties, climbing onto monitors, dancing on the bar at the back whilst hitting a cowbell, oozing with confidence and as perfect as the bands we’ve already mentioned that have become hugely popular and have their logos emblazed on many punters T-shirts during the summer.

Dead Disco is Franz Ferdinand with an electronic makeover, H.E.A.T will sit nicely with those who have been enjoying throwing themselves around to Fat Dog recently, as is the magnificent Sedated that will surely become a huge favourite for anyone on their first listen.

Lemonsuckr: The Lexington, London – Live ReviewLemonsuckr then. Making music similar to the music we found ourselves raving to late at night, being performed by Adult DVD last summer. It’s a cool name, they’re cool boys, nonchalant, confident, and we imagine they’re about to see things change in their lives this year. There’ll no doubt be a lot more to come from these as the rest of the year ploughs on, and you have now been made aware of this. Welcome to 2026, a year that seems to have begun just as the last one ended.
