Arson investigation after fire at Sherford flat block

Police are investigating a suspected arson attack at a block of flats in Sherford, Plymouth.Emergency services were called at 02:30 BST on Friday, after the fire started in the communal entrance of the four-storey building on Aquila Drive.A total of 28 people were trapped and had to be rescued by the fire service, with 18 people treated for smoke inhalation.Det Insp Katy Deer of Devon and Cornwall Police said: "This fire put the lives of 30 people at risk and could have had devastating and fatal consequences." Plan to reduce Plymouth A38 Parkway speed limit after 157 crashes

There are plans to reduce the speed limit on the A38 Plymouth Parkway after a review found the area's crash rate was "double the national average".National Highways said it wanted to reduce the speed limit between the Marsh Mills interchange and Tamar Bridge from 70mph to 60mph. Jack Mason, south west road safety manager, said data had identified 157 crashes on the road, resulting in 226 injuries, between 2020 and 2024."We will soon start the statutory process to introduce the proposed speed reduction, which will reduce the number and severity of collisions, and we expect the new limit to be in place and enforceable this winter," he added.It said a safety review found speed was a contributor to the crashes between 2020 and 2024."Using this collision data and local insight we're now proposing a permanent speed limit change from 70mph to 60mph as a first step in safety enhancements on the Parkway," it added. An investigation has been launched after a woman was sexually assaulted on a canal path in Exeter.Devon and Cornwall Police said a woman had been attacked near the canal path running alongside Water Lane between 23:30 and 23:35 BST on Friday."A man dressed in dark clothing riding a push bike sexually assaulted a woman who was walking along the canal path in the Double Locks direction," the force said.Officers are appealing for anyone with information about the incident to contact them."Officers are particularly keen to hear from anyone who saw a male acting suspiciously in the area of Quay Haven Road, Water Lane, the canal path or Marsh Barton around the time of the incident," a force spokesperson added.
