Charity renews support for Devon and Cornwall families

A road safety group has received renewed funding to support children's bereavement charities in Devon and Cornwall and provide help for families affected by road crashes. National charity Brake funds two caseworkers for Devon, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly to provide practical and emotional support. Woman and child rescued after tree falls on car in Plymouth

Emergency services had to rescue a woman and a child who were trapped inside a car after a tree fell on it. Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said crews attended Haye Road in Plymstock, Plymouth, on Saturday at about 11:15 BST.The fire service said police and the ambulance service also attended and removed the occupants, who were checked at the scene by paramedics. A hospital trust is encouraging people to get their flu vaccinations and Covid-19 boosters before the winter months.The Royal Devon University Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust said the best time to get vaccinations was "well before winter illnesses peak".Chief medical officer Vanessa Purday said the flu vaccine prevented between 96,000 and 120,200 hospitalisations in England last year. A man has suffered life-threatening injuries after a single-car crash, police have said.The crash involving a blue Ford Fusion happened on Stoke Road in Exeter at about 08:40 BST, Devon and Cornwall Police said.Officers said a 45-year-old man, from Tiverton, was taken to Derriford Hospital in Plymouth with serious injuries and the road was closed for nearly six hours for investigative work.The force appealed for for witnesses and anyone with dashcam footage to contact them.
