A teenager is running 450km throughout December “to make a real difference for those in need”.
Aidan Watts, 19, is increasing his distance by 1.5km each day, finishing with a 36km run on Christmas Eve.
He took on the challenge to support The Salvation Army’s Christmas Present Appeal in Devonport, which provides gifts for children in families facing financial hardship.
Mr Watts’ efforts exceeded his initial expectations, with donations doubling his original target of £300, prompting him to set a new goal of £1,500.
Mr Watts, from Plymouth, said: “Christmas is my favourite time of year… for countless families, children, and individuals, it is a season of loneliness, financial stress, hunger, and worry. I want to use this challenge to help change that.”
He said running through fatigue and bad weather helped him reflect on the struggles others face during the festive season: “What I kept saying in my head is ‘this is nothing compared to how many other people feel this time of year’.
“This isn’t about one achievement, but about all of us coming together to make a real difference for those in need.”
Mr Watts admitted “people think this idea is just insanity” as he only took up running about six months ago.
Despite mentioning that fatigue had taken both a physical and mental toll on him, he said: “Nothing is stopping me.”
Captain Andy Toby who leads The Salvation Army in Devonport Morice said: “We are in awe of Aidan’s incredible commitment.
“Every pound he raises will help us put a gift under the tree for a child and bring hope to a family facing a difficult winter.”
