Work to upgrade the gas network in a Cornwall town has been described as “vital” to ensuring gas flows safely and reliably to homes and businesses across the area.

Wales & West Utilities said the project to upgrade pipes in St Austell Street, Truro, started on Monday and would finish by 9 February if everything went to plan.

New Bridge Street, Duke Street, St Mary’s Street and Mitchell Hill would experience closures.

There would also be multi-way traffic lights on St Clement Street, Austell Street and Furniss Close.

Natalie Raphael, from Wales & West Utilities, said: “We know that working in areas like this is not ideal, but it is essential to make sure we keep the gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area, and to make sure the gas network is fit for the future.

“While most of the gas network is underground and out of sight, it plays a central role in the daily lives of this community.

“This work is essential to keep the gas flowing to local homes and businesses today, and to make sure the gas network is ready to transport green gases in the future.”
