The site of an art deco cinema destroyed by fire nearly 10 years ago looks set to be redeveloped, after the plans were approved.

Regent Cinema in Lyme Regis, Dorset, was wrecked in a blaze in March 2016, causing the roof to collapse.

The scheme, approved by Dorset Council in December, includes two four-bedroom apartments, one of which will have a linked studio flat.

The surviving part of the Grade II listed building will be revamped to provide two retail units and an apartment on the upper floors.

The site on Broad Street has been derelict since the fire and has been the subject of previous planning applications that have been rejected or withdrawn.

The surviving foyer building has recently been put to use by a local drinks company, using it as a pop-up shop and bar.

The redevelopment plans received more than 100 responses, with supporters saying the site had been derelict for too long.

Many of the objectors called for the cinema to be rebuilt, however, pre-application advice from planning officers said there was “no realistic prospect of a cinema use being re-established in this case”.
