Torquay United coach Ronnie Jepson hailed his side’s character as they came from a goal down to beat Chesham United 2-1 in National League South.
Jepson, taking charge with caretaker boss Neil Warnock unavailable due to a prior commitment, saw the Gulls go a goal down in the second minute when Karl Oliyide scored for the visitors.
But Sonny Fish equalised nine minutes before half-time and the Gulls took the lead with 16 minutes left thanks to Dan Hayfield having seen Chesham reduced to 10 men on the hour mark.
Will Tizzard was sent-off for the hosts shortly after Hayfield’s goal, but Torquay held on for a second consecutive victory
The win moves Torquay back up to fourth in the table as they begin to return to form after a seven-game winless run that saw them throw away a three-point lead at the top and cost manager Paul Wotton his job.
The Gulls are expected to unveil a new manager this week.
“They give everything they’ve got for us,” Jepson told BBC Radio Devon.
“After the start we had, that’s a test of your character then, and the boys came back in abundance and from one to 11 they were excellent.
“Yes, we can be better in little areas, but in terms of the spell they’re going through, we’ve got them going a little bit now, that little bit of self-belief is coming back, and with that self-belief confidence breeds winning and that’s what we’ve done today.”
