Modern Woman: Daniel

Modern Woman are back again as they release their third single of the year, simply entitled Daniel. This is a song which focuses very much on the melodious side of their craft with a sound framed with a haunting, acoustic and intensely melodramatic vibe.
London art-rock outfit Modern Woman are a band with a strong penchant for the unpredictable as they explore the boundaries where noise collides with melody, as if to reach emotional depths which may have been previously unchartered. And this approach is really testing the waters as they continue with their series of single releases each month this year. And now we are into March, their third single, Daniel, filters through the airwaves with a sonic shift very much towards melody and sentimentality.
Daniel is a new take on a song which first appeared on their debut vinyl EP, Dogs Fighting In My Dream, back in 2021 so has already been road-tested and will be familiar to their fans.
Daniel certainly reveals a much starker and intimate side of singer and primary songwriter Sophie Harris’s talents which will undoubtedly prove to be one of the quieter and more personal moments from the forthcoming album, Johnny’s Dreamworld. This album has already been recorded and is set to be unleashed in May 2026. Dominated by Sophie’s beautiful, raw and somewhat ethereal vocals, a feeling also conveyed through the accompanying video, it’s a song accompanied only by her own acoustic guitar and David Denyer’s haunting violin, all of which coalesces into an poignant and highly sensitive tale.
As Sophie explains, “I wrote this in North Wales a long time ago. It’s a simple song. I hope it captures some sort of spirit-feeling. I was camping near a lake we used to go to all the time as a kid when I wrote it. I really love David’s violin on this, creating sounds like the tapping of rigging on boats etc. We kept the recording sparse.”

A Plea From Louder Than War
Louder Than War is run by a small but dedicated independent team, and we rely on the small amount of money we generate to keep the site running smoothly. Any money we do get is not lining the pockets of oligarchs or mad-cap billionaires dictating what our journalists are allowed to think and write, or hungry shareholders. We know times are tough, and we want to continue bringing you news on the most interesting releases, the latest gigs and anything else that tickles our fancy. We are not driven by profit, just pure enthusiasm for a scene that each and every one of us is passionate about.
To us, music and culture are eveything, without them, our very souls shrivel and die. We do not charge artists for the exposure we give them and to many, what we do is absolutely vital. Subscribing to one of our paid tiers takes just a minute, and each sign-up makes a huge impact, helping to keep the flame of independent music burning! Please click the button below to help.
