Tom Cleverley hopes Plymouth Argyle can overcome their ‘mental hurdles’

Tom Cleverley says he has been working with his Plymouth Argyle side to try and overcome their “mental hurdles”.

The Pilgrims are second-from-bottom of League One and have not taken a point from a losing position this season.

Having been on a six-game losing streak they have won two of their past three matches in all competitions – both 1-0 victories.

But Cleverley says his side needs more resilience when they go behind.

They were beaten 3-0 by Northampton Town at Home Park last week after conceding 13 minutes into the second half.

“We’ve got some experienced players returning, which will be helpful in those moments,” Cleverley told BBC Radio Devon.

“There’s one or two little things that we’ve been brainstorming that we’ve shared with the players, because it’s something that we need to improve.”

Cleverley has seen his injury-hit side win just five League One matches this season and have conceded a division-high 31 goals in 17 games.

They are a point off safety, but in the congested League One table are only 12 points off the play-off places.

He says the statistics have shown that his side is struggling when they go a goal behind and they must do better at reacting to conceding.

“We’ve not taken a point from a losing position and that’s playing on our mind,” he said.

“We’ve gone through all our chance creation for and against. When we’re winning, we create double than when we concede.

“When we’re drawing, we create just more than when we concede.

“When we’re losing, normally you’d think the team losing has a go, we concede double than we create, so it’s clearly a mental hurdle that we just need to get past.

“Obviously we’ve got a frustrated fan base at the minute, but them really digging in for the boys as well will help them.”
