Good morning. The government has decided to abolish the office of Police and Crime Commissioner in England, Wales and Cornwall by 2028.
Policing minister Sarah Jones said the office had “not delivered what it was set up to achieve”.
The commissioner for Devon and Cornwall, Alison Hernandez, said that she was surprised by the decision, which she described as “a sudden announcement without any consultation” with the Office of the Commissioner.
The Home Office wants the role of the commissioner to be undertaken by an elected mayor, or if there isn’t a mayor, by the leader of the local council.
Ms Hernandez said that it would be sensible for the role of commissioner to be undertaken by a mayor, but she was worried because there were currently no plans for an elected mayor in Devon and Cornwall.

South West Water has launched a new fund worth £2 million which aims to improve the quality of water in the natural world.
The company will offer grants to environmental and voluntary groups in Cornwall, the Isles of Scilly and Devon, which want to co-operate with it on new projects to store rainwater and manage water quality in our countryside.
The CEO of Pennon Group, Susan Davy, said, “By working hand-in-hand with local communities, we can protect and restore our rivers, landscapes and wildlife, creating lasting improvements to water quality, biodiversity, and local pride.”
Groups can apply for a grant of £10,000 to work on a smaller project, but there will grants of as much as £250,000 available for major schemes.

A seventy-one-year-old woman from Newlyn has won her class in the New York Marathon and become World Champion for people between the ages of 70 and 74.
Ms Simmons, who is a member of Hayle Runners, finished the race in a personal best time of a little over 3 hours 37 minutes – eight minutes less than her previous best time.
She won the same class at the Boston Marathon in April and she hopes to defend her title of World Champion at a race in Cape Town next year.
The chairman of Heyl Runners said she was “a global inspiration to older runners everywhere”.
And that’s all from me for this week. Until next time!
