Torquay United boss Paul Wotton says he felt he was “wasting his breath” in his side’s 1-0 loss at 10-man AFC Totton.

Brandon Haunstrup got the only goal of the game shortly before half time for the hosts.

He was sent off shortly before the hour mark for a second booking and the Gulls won a penalty soon after which Jordan Young fired over the bar.

The Gulls failed to capitalise on a number of chances as they lost for the second successive game and dropped to fifth place in National League South.

“There’s no way you should lose the game, but we have, so it’s a huge opportunity missed,” Wotton told BBC Radio Devon.

“I’m annoyed. There’s a couple of things I didn’t like. I don’t want to be that manager who just goes, ‘well, we’ll get home, we’ll get rested, we’ll pick ourselves up Monday and go again Boxing Day’.

“Of course we will, because there’s no other option, that’s football, but I’m angry.

“I felt like I was wasting my breath today. I’m in the dugout screaming and shouting, and I don’t feel like the players executed what we wanted them to do.

“It wasn’t through lack of trying or endeavour, it wasn’t that at all, that’s not in question.

“It’s a really disappointing afternoon for us.”

WOTTON

It’s bitterly disappointing, I can’t believe we went in at half-time, 1-0 down.

They had a couple of chances, that was from us playing stupid sideways passes or backward passes, we were in complete control.

I said at half-time ‘I think if we go out and start the first 15 minutes really well, really front-footed I fancy us to get right back in the game and go on and win it’, we didn’t do that.

I thought we started the second half poorly, I questioned a few individuals on that which was disappointing, and then obviously the game changes a sending off and then we get a penalty straight away.

We miss it and then in brutal honesty we huffed and puffed, we’ve had two cleared off the line, multiple chances, but in the end we just started slinging balls in the box which Totton want, that’s and the frustration is there was 30 minutes to go plus injury time, ends up 37 minutes and it was a very clear message onto them, that ball’s got to keep going side to side so in the end we’ll create an overload in a wide area and they didn’t do it,

There’s no way you should lose the game, but we have, so it’s a huge opportunity missed.
