Good morning. Cornwall Council have announced that it intends to increase council tax bills by nearly 5% this year.
The council said that there was a gap of £50 million between the amount of money which it will receive and the amount it should spend, so it cannot avoid putting up the tax.However, the council wants to protect its most important services, such as social care for vulnerable adults and children.
Additionally, the council will have to try to save money by working more efficiently and, until the 27th of January, residents can send the council their suggestions and thoughts about the matter. The final budget will be agreed at a full council meeting in February.

A new organisation has been set up in Wadebridge to increase the amount of dental services available in Cornwall.
The organisation is called The North Cornwall Dental Group, and it wants to work with dentists and community groups to support the NHS in that area.
The group hopes to set up a clinic in a Wadebridge community centre, called The Goods Shed, to provide dental treatment, and perhaps other services such as an X-ray machine. The need is great. According to a report by Healthwatch Cornwall, more than a third of adults in Cornwall had been unable to see an NHS dentist in the previous two years. NHS Cornwall said that it was already providing “thousands of additional appointments” for emergency dental treatment, but it would be happy to work with the new group in Wadebridge.

Translation 3
The Lizard Wireless Station is celebrating its 125th anniversary this month. The station was opened on January 1st 1901, and it was able to communicate with ships out of sight of the land, at a distance of more than 80 miles – much further than was thought possible at the time. Later that same month, the station received a radio signal from St Catherine’s Point on the Isle of Wight, and proved that radio waves could follow the curvature of the Earth. These discoveries led to the first transatlantic transmission from Poldhu, later that same year, by Guglielmo Marconi.
The station is now managed by the National Trust, and on several days throughout January, there will be volunteer radio operators transmitting live there.
