A vicar who spent Christmas in hospital after being injured in a motorcycle crash has thanked his parishioners for their support.

Rector of the Bride Valley and Chesil group of churches, Reverend Andrew Rawlings, suffered serious leg injuries when he was involved in a collision with a Volkswagen car on the Coast Road near Burton Bradstock, Dorset, on 19 December.

He was taken by air ambulance to hospital in Southampton where he had several operations over the Christmas and New Year period.

He posted on the church’s Facebook page that there had been an “outpouring of love, good wishes and generosity” towards him and his family.

A passenger from the Volkswagen, a woman in her 80s, was also taken to hospital for treatment to injuries that were not believed to be serious, Dorset Police said following the crash.

Rawlings posted video messages for his parishioners during his stay in hospital, including on Christmas Day.

“Thank you so much for making this of the best Christmases ever, just because of the outpouring of love, good wishes and generosity,” he wrote.

He revealed that immediately before surgery he had listened to Run by Snow Patrol.

“Whatever pain you are enduring right now, however long the journey ahead might be, keep breathing and keep running. Love is right beside you, dear,” he said.

He posted another update shortly before he was discharged from hospital on 8 January, saying he faced more surgery on his right knee over the next 18 months.

Dorset Police said no one had been arrested charged in connection with the crash.
