Independent businesses have welcomed a town council’s decision to foot the bill for parking charges for central car parks in the run-up to Christmas.

Taunton Town Council is paying Somerset Council a fee so that people can use 10 of their car parks free of charge for the final Saturdays before Christmas.

The move is part of an effort to support local shops and boost the festive atmosphere in the town and has been welcomed by business owners.

“It’s a nice surprise when they come to pay and that puts them in a good mood when they come to shop,” said Susie Thomas, owner of Rocket and Bird.

“It’s welcome, anything that brings footfall to the town centre is welcome,” said Phillip Messey, owner of The Little Wine Shop.

Other steps designed to improve the atmosphere include the putting up of more lights and choirs and bands performing on the street.

“I think the Christmas lights have been one of the main things that’s helped the town shine brighter and bring more people in to shop,” said Ms Thomas.

“I think the performers also play a part in creating a lovely festive atmosphere for people,” she added.

Ms Thomas said this has been her busiest Christmas in seven years of business and believes there is a drive to support local businesses in the town.

“We hope everyone enjoys exploring the shops, meeting friends, and soaking up the festive atmosphere while supporting our wonderful local businesses,” said Mayor of Taunton, councillor Martin Straus.
