LA Mayor Busy Jumping in the Middle of Active Immigration Enforcement – HotAir

On a day when THIS  happens (and John has a terrific round-up of the whole thing)…

…the pin-headed mayor of Los Angeles heard about a federal immigration operation going down at MacArthur Park in her city.

…SKYCal first captured visuals of the operation at about 10:45 a.m., as officers on horseback moved from one end of the park to the other. Officers didn’t take anyone into custody while traveling on horseback at that time.

The L.A. Police Department told CBS News Los Angeles that it was unaware of any ongoing operation at MacArthur Park.

At least some of the officers appeared to be with U.S. Customs and Border Protection based on signage on their vehicles. A small protest began to gather as the officers exited the park.

ICE and CBP agents going about their jobs like the professionals they are in a sanctuary city openly flouting federal laws.

…ICE provided CBS News with the following statement:

“U.S. Customs and Border Protection led a large–scale federal immigration enforcement operation in downtown Los Angeles today, supported by the military units that President Trump deployed to the area earlier this year to protect federal property and agents. ICE was involved but the operation was led by CBP, which has been overseeing immigration enforcement efforts in the LA area for the past weeks.”

What does Bass do?

Well, unlike the Los Angeles fires, where she couldn’t be bothered to get a ride home from the party in Ghana until things had turned really ugly, the mayor hustled down to the park like Crusader Rabbit-Brain and charged into the middle of federal officers trying to do their duties.

STOP THAT RIGHT NOW

She demanded a cell phone to speak to ‘superiors.’

I’m assuming in order to be able to let the CBP and ICE higher-ups know of her displeasure with their disruption of MacArthur Park’s notorious ‘vendors.’

Just simple people trying to make a living from the land.

Local media is playing Bass up as a conquering heroine – ‘swift intervention’ and ‘confrontation’ verbiage – but they’re all in the sanctuary basket together, so that’s unsurprising.

A massive federal immigration operation in MacArthur Park drew swift intervention from Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass on Monday, after a significant show of force involving armored vehicles and mounted officers resulted in no arrests. The scene, described by many as confusing and alarming, left residents shaken and local leaders demanding answers.

…Midway through the activity, Mayor Karen Bass arrived on scene and questioned the agents directly. A conversation with a representative identified on the scene as the “Head of Customs” led to a phone call in which Bass asked, “So they’ve stopped that? They’ve completed their mission here? What’s the timeframe before they leave?”

Soon after, the agents began pulling out. The show of force quickly dissipated, with federal vehicles departing the area and no visible enforcement action taken.

But in all honesty, she looked pretty rattled and didn’t stay for very long. More like a wet hen with ruffled feathers who beat a hasty retreat after doing what she was forced to do to get reelected, not because she felt any great sense of moral courage.

It might also have been precautionary. Melugin said Bass’s reinforcement ground troops had shown up at last, and no doubt she probably didn’t want anything flung on the powder blue suit. Or to get caught in the middle of a physical scrum.

Ew. Protestors are great until they aren’t.

Communists always wear expensive threads, you know, while fighting for the common man.

The question became, when does the mayor interject and go too far and ICE or the CBP lays hands on the powder blue to either eject her from a scene or actually arrest her for interfering?

I’m sure she’s had some serious legal discussions with her team on just how far she can go before that happens, which might also explain her nervousness. She didn’t actually impede the team so much as her arrival interrupted what was going on. She also asked to speak to whoever was directing the operation and quizzed them about details over the phone, but I didn’t hear her telling the feds they had to stop, which she knows she has no authority to do.

She told the TV station she wanted them gone.

The local Fox station says it’s a turning point:

The incident marks a striking moment of local leadership pushing back against federal enforcement in a public and unfiltered way. Mayor Bass’s rapid response underscored the growing tensions between federal immigration authorities and city leaders who have pushed for transparency and community safety over displays of force. It also raises questions about how and why enforcement actions are deployed in populated urban areas — especially when no enforcement ultimately takes place.

It’s going to be interesting waiting to see what turns as far as how Homan and DHS respond from this point forward.
