Lando Norris inspires children in Somerset to take up motorsport

Formula 1 World Champion Lando Norris has inspired many young people to take up the sport, his former karting trainer said.

The 26-year-old, who was born in Bristol and grew up in Glastonbury, was crowned champion in Abu Dhabi. His third-place finish in the 2025 season finale ensured he beat rival Max Verstappen to the drivers’ championship by just two points.

Rob Dodds, who coached Norris in karting at BKC Racing when he was seven years old, said since Norris’ career took off he has seen an increase in young people interested in the sport.

“There’s a massive influx into karting and motorsport in general, really. Especially because Lando is so personable,” he added.

Mr Dodds added that it was “very surreal” to see Norris win over the weekend.

“It’s massive. I don’t think people actually realise how much pressure these young lads are under,” he said.

He said there was always a sibling rivalry between Lando and his brother Oliver.

“He had his brother to aspire to. He was a competent driver himself and there was a sibling rivalry. Whenever he went testing or racing, Lando wanted to be the fastest.”

Dan Close, deputy head of Millfield Prep School, which Lando attended, said that Norris “kept to his values”.

“He’s got everything he deserves. He’s been on this journey since he joined us in Year three,” Mr Close said.

“He would take time off school, to travel the country and eventually the world. He’d come back with these trophies and initially didn’t want them presented in assembly because he was too shy.

“We are very proud of everything he’s achieved.”

Sue Lewis, a teaching assistant at Lando Norris’ old primary school, Chew Stoke Church School in Bristol, said that even as a little boy, Norris “always wanted to win”.

She added: “I know Lando is a great inspiration, certainly to all our children, they love hearing about him. They feel special that they can be like Lando.”

Ms Lewis said watching the race over the weekend was “really nerve racking”.

“We were all very confident our Lando could win it,” she added.

“Lando has always been and always will be a lovely thoughtful little boy and young man.”
