The win was also significant for summer signing Jack MacKenzie.

The 25-year-old – who moved to Devon from Scottish side Aberdeen in the summer – finally made his first start for the club after an injury-ravaged first season.

He suffered a knee problem in pre-season followed by shin splints, but finally made his debut as a substitute in the loss at Stockport County on 31 January.

MacKenzie made three more substitute appearances in all competitions before finally starting in Saturday’s win.

“I’m very pleased with his performance,” Cleverley said.

“You could tell he’s played for a big club in Scotland, the 16,000 here didn’t affect him whatsoever. I thought he was really consistent throughout the game.

“He got tired towards the end and Luke Molyneux is one of the best wingers in the league and I thought he kept him very quiet.”
