The excitement is mounting as Dead Pioneers release their last single off the highly anticipated second album PO$T AMERICAN which is purely going to blow you away says Wayne AF Carey…
Gregg Deal needs your attention. Every once in a while a group hits the scene that sends your music brain into overload with how great they are. Dead Pioneers are one of them. Discovered by our hardcore punk expert Nathan Brown last year they are raising the bar in the stakes with the most incendiary thought provoking album I’ve heard since… Fuck me… A while. Their debut album reviewed here was fresh out of the blocks with the message from Gregg about the indigenous population being proper fucked over by white America, backed with the fury of Black Flag / Fugazi / Rage Against The Machine. You get my point.
PO$T AMERICAN leapfrogs over that bar with a slick production, thoughtful lyrics and an adrenaline rush of hardcore punk we’ve not witnessed in years. I shit you not. Caucasity says it all with the lyrics of ignorance about a wet behind the ears twat brought up by Trumpian parents, questioning the roots of the real settlers who have been shat upon from a great height within the corrupt American system. It’s a rumbling tune that has shades of The Fall’s repetitive sound, yet also brings to mind the great lyrics of Michael Franti from The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy who graced the 90’s with their clever spoken word hip hop. A vital message to right wing redneck wankers.
What Gregg says:
“In the spirit of ‘Bad Indian,’ this song tells the story of a true moment with a common set of languages and communications by non-Native people. While tongue and cheek, it’s also a true reflection of a marginalized person being asked to justify their actions, if not their entire existence.
A culmination of the words Caucasian and Audacity, Caucasity is a word created in activist corners denoting a special level of being shamelessly bold. It’s credited to writer and comedian Joel Martinez, known professionally as The Kid Mero. His first mainstream use of the term was in a music review he wrote for Vice in 2012. Kid Mero has used caucacity on Twitter since 2014.
This piece is the true story of an interaction with a shamelessly bold white college student that turns into a perfect example of the word while also showcasing the hurdles put in front of professional People of Color despite age, education or perceived authority. These are everyday occurrences in public spaces, academia and throughout our lives.”
If you need to hear one album this year buy PO$T AMERICAN. It will be a fucking task to topple this from our album of the year list from any contender…
Dead Pioneers are guitarists Josh Rivera and Abe Brennan, drummer Shane Zweygardt and bassist Lee Tesche (who is also lead guitarist for Algiers), with Gregg Deal on vocals.
