Book lovers are being urged to mark their calendars for the return of Exeter City of Literature’s Book Market.
The annual event will take place on Exeter’s Cathedral Green on Sunday 8 June, from 11am until 4pm.
The event – now in it’s fifth year – is a celebration of Devon’s thriving literary scene.
Since its inception in 2021, the Book Market has become a staple in Exeter’s cultural calendar, uniting independent bookshops from across Devon to create a one-day bookish haven in the heart of the city.
With each passing year, the event has grown in scale and popularity, drawing readers, authors, and visitors eager to immerse themselves in a world of stories, creativity, and community spirit.
Last year’s introduction of the Author Tent was a resounding success. Featured authors included Sunday Times bestseller and University of Exeter graduate Esmie Jikiemi-Pearson, Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick author Sarah Pearse, and Bridport prize-winning novelist Fiona Williams.
This year’s lineup of literary talent will be announced in the coming weeks, promising another stellar roster of authors ready to share their locally-crafted stories and insights.
This year, 12 independent bookshops from across Devon are already confirmed to attend, with an expanded selection of vendors offering free literary-themed activities, crafts, and food, and drink.
Visitors can expect a day packed with exciting bookish activities—previous years have featured everything from bite-sized bibliotherapy sessions and comic-making workshops to a wheelchair-powered letterpress and memoir-writing tasters.
Among the confirmed bookshops are:
- Seven Fables, a sanctuary of inspiration on Exmoor that offers a curated selection of British folklore, myth and legend fiction, poetry, and nature writing.
- The Bookery, a community owned bookshop and event hub in Crediton that won ‘independent bookshop of the year’ at the British Book Awards in 2022.
- The Old Queeriosity Shop, a queer-run bookshop in Plymouth specialising in LGBTQIA+ literature, spanning fiction and non-fiction, poetry and children’s books.
Anna Cohn Orchard, Executive Director of Exeter City of Literature, said: “Books have this incredible power—not just to transport us, but to connect us. And that’s what The Book Market is all about. It’s a celebration of stories, of readers and writers, and of independent booksellers coming together in one place. Whether you’re a lifelong reader or just discovering the joy of books, this is an event where everyone belongs. When we share stories, we build community. So come on down to explore, meet incredible writers and booksellers, and be part of something special!”
Catherine Hill, Head of Culture for Exeter City Council, said: “The Exeter City of Literature Book Market is a testament to our community’s love for stories and creativity. It’s a wonderful opportunity for people of all ages to come together, discover new books, and celebrate the vibrant literary culture that makes our city so special. We look forward to welcoming everyone to this year’s event and continuing to foster a love of reading and storytelling in Exeter.”
With more details and surprises still to be announced, this year’s Book Market is shaping up to be the biggest and most lively edition from Exeter City of Literature yet! Whether people are avid readers, budding writers, or simply looking for a unique way to spend a summery Sunday, this event is not to be missed.
