Cherry tree in poor health to be removed from park gates

A cherry tree at the entrance of a popular park is in poor health and will unfortunately have to be removed.

The cherry tree which stands just outside the gates of King George V Playing Fields in Topsham Road, has been identified as high risk to people and properties.

Tree experts have identified significant crown decline and major deadwood overhanging the highway and footpath.

This location is suitable for planting a replacement tree so after the felling operation the stump will be ground out and the Council will start considering suitable species for replacement.

Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for City Management, said: “It’s sad but when a tree comes to the end of its life and poses a risk to people and property, we have to take the appropriate action and remove it.

“We carefully monitor our trees for disease and by keeping a watchful eye, we can take a cautious approach to assess whether recovery is possible, or that decline – as in this case – is so bad that the tree has to be removed.

“We are passionate about our trees and green spaces in Exeter and will – where it’s suitable to do so –  always look to replace the tree with something new.”
