CP Political Committee condemns Labour’s anti-working class warmongers

Britain’s Communists have condemned Keir Starmer’s Labour government as “an anti-working class, warmongering cabal hell-bent on militarising our economy and society”.

Liz Payne told the Party’s Political Committee on Tuesday evening (24 June 2025) that hundreds of billions of pounds were now being earmarked for warfare, while millions of poor families, welfare claimants and women without pensions face a future of benefit cuts and rising food, housing and energy bills.

“Prime Minister Starmer applauds the illegal, unprovoked US attack on Iran, connives with Israeli genocide in Palestine and pledges to ramp up Britain’s military spending to 5 per cent of GDP”, she pointed out, “all to the applause of President Trump, NATO warmonger-in-chief Mark Rutte, and war criminal Benjamin Netantahu and his fascist cabinet”.

Ms Payne, an Executive member of the World Peace Council, recounted the Labour Party’s long history of upholding the interests of British and US imperialism while, at the same time, offering a progressive alternative to the Tories in social and welfare policy.

“Now we have a so-called Labour government that uses its freakish parliamentary majority – the result of our anti-democratic electoral system – to rob the disabled at home and the poorest people in the Third World and why? To enrich the military-industrial complex and protect big business interests around the world”, she answered.

In particular, the convenor of the CP Peace Advisory Committee nailed the lie that NATO has “kept the peace” since its formation in 1949, six years before the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact.

“Instead, as the Soviet Union, East Germany, Poland and Czechoslovakia rebuilt their war-shattered countries, NATO provided the cover for US military expansion across Europe to the borders of Russia, with nuclear weapons stationed in Italy, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Turkey and soon returning to Lakenheath, Suffolk”, Ms Payne argued.

Rejecting threats of military intervention against China over Taiwan, she called for Britain’s withdrawal from NATO, the removal of US military bases from Britain and the closure of British bases in Cyprus and Diego Garcia.

Britain’s Communists also urged party members and other peace supporters to promote and distribute the CND’s Alternative Defence Review as an antidote to Labour, US, NATO and EU militarisation and warmongering.

END.
