Fire safety advice could be a life-saver

People in Exeter who are rough sleeping or in temporary, supported accommodation have been given essential fire prevention tips that could help save lives in the future.

The event was organised by Exeter City Council’s housing teams and supported housing provider, Prospects House, with crucial advice from Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service.

As well as general fire prevention advice such as how to deal with chip pan fires, people were shown how to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning. There was also water safety advice when camping beside a river and how to use throw lines to save someone in the water.

The ambulance service and police were also in attendance to offer advice.

Marina Asvachin, Lead Councillor for Housing, Homelessness Prevention and Customer Services, said: “Some of the advice given is invaluable and may just save lives in the future.

“I would like to thank everyone for making this day such a success, including representatives from Devon & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, the police and ambulance service, and our own housing teams for organising the event.”

As part of the day, there was also a barbecue for those attending, a chance to enjoy some hot food and meet friendly faces.
