Another 2,000 homes in Exeter are set to receive weekly food waste collections.
The latest roll-out of kerbside collections will cover areas of Topsham, as plans to get the whole city involved continue to take shape.
Currently around a third of Exeter – 22,000 properties – benefits from kerbside food waste collections and the service has seen the city’s recycling rate rise by an additional 4%.
Two thousand properties in Topsham will start receiving collections from Monday 7 April.
Those homes involved will be receiving a pack containing information about the collections and caddy stickers.
Caddies – one black 23 litre kerbside caddy and one 5 litre grey/silver kitchen caddy – will be delivered from Monday 31 March.
Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for City Management, said: “We’re pleased to be adding more homes to the roll-out of the food waste collection scheme and we’re working hard to get everyone – the whole city – involved.”
The service is proving popular and has already made a big difference. During the 2023/24 financial year, 4% – 1,436 tonnes – of the city’s waste was diverted to anaerobic digestion, where it ends up as a soil improver and fertiliser as well as generating electricity.
Following works being carried out to the Council’s depot, further roll-out will continue, with another two food waste vehicles collecting from households by the end of 2025.
“I would just like to ask people to please be patient as we roll out to more parts of the city,” added Cllr Williams.
