Mothering Sunday a ‘complex day’ after baby loss

A charity believes all mothers should be celebrated on Mothering Sunday and urged those who have experienced baby loss to be “gentle” on themselves.

Aimee Green, founder and chief executive officer of Luna’s Fund, said Mother’s Day was a “complex day” for parents who had lost a child.

She said mums who had suffered the loss of a baby, and did not have any other children, often suffered from an “identity crisis”.

“I carry my baby in my heart and not in my arms like other mums,” she said.

Ms Green created Luna’s Fund, based in Plymouth, after her own experience of baby loss in 2017.

Luna’s Fund offers support to families who have experience baby loss in Devon and Cornwall.

Ms Green said her Mother’s Day would involve eating pancakes made for by her family and a trip to the beach.

She added: “Sometimes the lead up is worse than the actual day itself, seeing all the shops, full of all the cards, you just feel like you see babies everywhere all of a sudden.

“I think when you’ve been through one, or two Mother’s Days you kind of get an idea of what feelings may come up.”

She said her advice to those struggling on Mother’s Day was not to ignore their feelings.

“Don’t try to push it away, don’t try and resent the feelings that come,” said Ms Green.
