Striking images of local female rugby players, coaches and volunteers have started appearing around Exeter to mark Women’s History Month and the Women’s Rugby World Cup coming to the city in August.
Inspiring the next generation, the powerful black and white images showcase the history of rugby in Exeter.
‘Because of Rugby…’ is an initiative from Visit Exeter and Exeter City Council, and aims to inspire future generations, promote inclusivity in sport, and celebrate the contributions of women to Exeter’s rugby story.
Large black and white images of some of Exeter’s players, coaches, staff and volunteers – past and present – are currently on display in key locations around the city. The images are also being shared on social media.
The images were provided by Saracens RFC, Topsham RFC, Exeter University, Exeter College, and Exeter Chiefs.
Women’s History Month runs throughout March and Saturday is International Women’s Day.
Exeter City Council’s Deputy Leader, Cllr Laura Wright, said: “These fabulous images shine a light on a number of women and girls in the city involved in rugby.
“They represent a dedication and passion for rugby, from grass roots level to the top of the game, celebrating Women’s History Month and playing a central part in Exeter’s build up to the Women’s Rugby World Cup.”
Some of those featured in the photographs explained what rugby means to them.
Poppy Leitch, of Exeter Chiefs, said: “Rugby’s given me friendships that in times of need have propped me up, and in times of joy, given me shared laughter.”
Kayleigh, of Exeter College, said: “Because of rugby I have a purpose.”
Natasha Currie, of Topsham RFC, said: “Because of rugby I have found an enjoyable way of keeping fit.” The Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 takes place from 22 August until 27 September, with Exeter one of the host cities for the prestigious tournament.
Sandy Park, home of Exeter Chiefs, will host matches involving France, Italy, New Zealand, Japan, Brazil, Scotland, Wales, Fiji and Canada, as well as quarter finals matches.
