Well-known Wellingtonia tree set to come down

A well-known Wellingtonia tree in Exeter city centre is to be felled because of safety concerns.

The tall Wellingtonia in Dix’s Field, outside the Civic Centre, has started to shed small branches and will be taken down on Monday (2 June).

The tree has been in advanced decline for some time, and all of the foliage has now died off. Sadly, it will not recover.

The felling will require a crane, which will be located on the grass to prevent disruption to traffic and pedestrians. The tree will be dismantled to produce three benches surrounding a 2.5m stump. The stump may be carved at a later date as a feature.

Replanting with Sakura cherry trees will take place during next winter’s planting window. Five Japanese Sakura cherries will be planted in the greenspace. These trees come from the Sakura Cherry Project, which has seen 10,000 trees planted across UK parks and gardens in celebration of Japan’s relationship with the UK.

Throughout Japan, the cherry, or ‘Sakura’, represents good fortune, new beginnings, and revival.

Cllr Ruth Williams, Lead Councillor for City Management, said: “It’s always sad when we lose a tree, especially such a large one, known to so many people who live in Exeter and visit the city. Unfortunately, trees – like people – don’t last forever, and when they go into decline, we need to act for the safety of everyone.

“I’m really pleased that we will be replanting near the tree and also making a lasting memorial with the benches.”
